The fourth Child - The Bread Legacy
Written By Philippe Wagenfuhrer
I would like to share the story of a bread recipe which has been handed down for many generations in my family. We used to fondly call the bread the "fourth child" as my Grand Mère had to care for it all her life. The reason for this bizarre name for a loaf bread is that this particular bread needed just as much nurturing and looking after as did my Grand Mère's 3 biological children, sometimes even more so as this was a continuation of the Wagenfuhrer legacy.
This very special gift, (the bread), which was given to my Grand Mère on her wedding day by her mother, proved to be one of her most treasured and loved gifts - a family heirloom so to speak, but, it also resulted in a life time of responsibility...

French Gastronomic Dinner: Alsace
Wednesday: 15 August 2007
Time: 19:00
Dinner: R220pp + R120pp (wine option)
Alsace is a French border, marked in its history and its culture by its geographical situation. Stronghold of the kingdom of Germany as of 9th century, it only became fully French during the reign of Louis XIV. Throughout history Alsace's borders switched back and forth many times between French and German territory, until World War II when it finally returned to being a part of France. Until today one can still feel a strong germanic influence.
Sauerkraut the local traditional dish is a must have from this region. This tasty regional specialty can be prepared in many ways. Among other things, Alsace is also famous for its Pork butchery: "Gendarmes", "Knacks", ham and other sausages are a real treat for meat lovers...
As for wines, Alsace is gifted with rich soil, perfect for cultivating vineyards responsible for the production and export of some famous white wines such as Gewurztraminer, Riesling or Tokay.
